Learn how to install an Astrozap aluminum dew shield on a Celestron 11" SCT, check the fit, and decide when a dew heater strip is still needed.

Quick answer

Slide the Astrozap AZ213-TB aluminum dew shield over the front cell of your Celestron 11" SCT until it seats evenly, then secure it with the supplied thumbscrews or felt-lined clamp. Check that the shield clears the corrector plate and does not shift when you slew the scope.

Why an aluminum shield fits differently from a flexible one

The AZ213-TB is a rigid, custom-fitted aluminum shield made specifically for 11" Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrains. That means it holds its shape and slides on as a solid tube rather than wrapping around the OTA. The trade-off is that it takes up more storage space and must be aligned squarely before you tighten anything.

Because the shield is rigid, you can't stretch or flex it to clear a finder bracket or a dovetail bar. Test the fit in daylight first, with the scope pointed horizontally, so you can see exactly where the shield contacts the front cell.

When a shield alone won't stop dew

A passive shield slows dew by trapping a layer of slightly warmer air in front of the corrector plate. On humid nights, or when the ambient temperature drops close to the dew point, that trapped air eventually equalizes and dew still forms. In those conditions, add a dew heater strip behind the corrector cell and run it at low power.

A common mistake is to crank a heater strip to full power to compensate for a poorly fitted shield. That can create local turbulence and uneven correction. Fit the shield first, then use the lowest heater setting that keeps the plate clear.

Step-by-step: fitting the Astrozap AZ213-TB

  1. Inspect the front cell and corrector: With the scope horizontal, check that the corrector retaining ring is flush and free of loose screws or tape. Wipe any grit off the outside of the front cell so the shield slides without scratching. If the retaining ring is loose, stop and fix that first; the shield will not seat evenly over a raised edge.
  2. Slide the shield on squarely: Bring the shield up from the front of the scope and slide it back over the cell in one smooth motion. Keep the shield parallel to the optical tube rather than tilting it on. Resistance usually means the shield is cocked, not too small. Back it off and restart rather than forcing it.
  3. Seat it against the front cell: Push the shield back until its rear edge sits flush against the front cell. Look around the circumference to confirm the gap is even. An uneven gap means the shield is not fully seated and may shift when the scope slews.
  4. Tighten the securing hardware: Snug the thumbscrews or clamp evenly, alternating sides. Tighten until the shield cannot rotate by hand, then stop. Over-tightening one screw can distort the shield's round shape and make it harder to remove later.
  5. Test clearance through the full range of motion: Slew the scope from horizon to zenith and check that the shield clears the mount, finder, and any cables. Re-check the corrector plate is not touched by the shield's inner edge. If the shield contacts the mount, reposition the dovetail or limit your slew range before observing.
  6. Decide whether to add a heater strip: After an hour outside, check the corrector for the first signs of fogging. If dew appears despite the shield, add a heater strip behind the corrector cell and start at low power. A shield that stays dry for two hours in your typical humidity is doing its job; no heater is needed on those nights.
