Compare the Coronado CEMAX 25mm H-Alpha eyepiece with the Explore Scientific 17mm 92° for solar observing. Learn which wide-field or contrast-enhanced design suits your solar setup.
Quick answer
For dedicated H-alpha solar observing, the Coronado CEMAX 25mm delivers superior contrast; for sweeping views of the Sun’s surface or night-sky deep-sky objects, the Explore Scientific 17mm 92° offers an immersive wide field.
Two eyepieces, two solar philosophies
The Coronado CEMAX 25mm is purpose-built for H-alpha solar work. Its contrast-enhanced design minimizes internal reflections and spurious light, making subtle solar features like filaments and prominences stand out more clearly. In contrast, the Explore Scientific 17mm 92° is an ultra-wide-field eyepiece designed for both solar and night-sky use, providing a panoramic view that keeps the Sun centered even on non-driven mounts.
Choosing between them depends on your solar observing goals: maximum contrast for detail or maximum field for context and tracking ease.
What the catalog tells us
The Coronado CEMAX 25mm (1.25" barrel) is priced at $54.87, making it an affordable specialist tool for solar observers who already own a Coronado or compatible H-alpha filter. The Explore Scientific 17mm 92° (2" barrel) costs $519.99, reflecting its premium wide-field optics and waterproof construction.
Neither eyepiece is a general-purpose ‘best’ choice; each excels in a specific observing context.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Contrast vs. field: Coronado CEMAX prioritizes contrast for fine H-alpha details; Explore Scientific 92° prioritizes field width for immersive views.
- Barrel size and compatibility: Coronado CEMAX uses a 1.25" barrel (fits most solar scopes and filters); Explore Scientific uses a 2" barrel (requires a 2" focuser or adapter). Check your telescope’s focuser before buying the 2" model.
- Price and specialization: Coronado CEMAX is budget-friendly and specialized for H-alpha; Explore Scientific is a premium investment that also works for night-sky deep-sky observing. If you only observe the Sun, the CEMAX saves money. If you want one eyepiece for both day and night, the Explore Scientific is more versatile.
